How to Figure Out the Best Career for You
Choosing a career can be daunting. With some self-awareness,self-reflection, and research, you can make an informed decision that will lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career. Here are some tips to help guide you through the process of deciding on your career path.
First, identify what passions and interests fill your life with happiness. Is there something that you enjoy doing that you are naturally good at? Do you already have a skill that you excel at, but it might not give you feelings of fulfillment? These may be critical indicators of a career path you should look into further. If you can find a career that brings you a sense of pride and satisfaction, that’s a bonus. Consider taking a personality test to gain a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses (16 Personalities → https://bit.ly/3XM0XNU).
Spend time and research different careers and industries. Think outside the box as well. Is there a market online for what you can offer the world (YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.)? Learn about the day-to-day responsibilities, required qualifications, and job outlook for various careers. This will help you narrow down your options and make an informed decision. Utilize online resources such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, and more to get insights into potential careers you are looking into. The more information you can find, the more informed your decision will be. You must be careful to filter out the wrong information and decipher what is true and relative to your search.
Consider your values and lifestyle. What kind of work environment do you thrive in? Are you looking for a high-paying job or one that aligns with your values and beliefs? Are you okay with a career that doesn’t have the best work/life balance but pays better? Or is work/life balance, more PTO, benefits, etc., worth more to you than a higher wage? It’s essential to find a career that aligns with your desired life, as this will lead to greater satisfaction and fulfillment in the long run.
Don’t be afraid to change your mind and pivot. The thought our parents put in our heads of “working with the same company for 30 years” is dead. Research shows that you will make less over your career (on average) staying with one company than if you were to switch jobs/careers throughout your life. Your career path may not be set in stone, and it’s okay to pivot or make a change if it’s not what you expected. The world of work is constantly changing and evolving, and it’s more important than ever to be adaptable and open to new opportunities.
Finally, remember that you have time. Don’t let your age or others sway you from your goals. You will work for a large portion of your life, find a job that brings you joy and fulfillment. You may not find this in your 20s, 30s, or even your 40’s. Finding the right fit will take time and effort, but with persistence and determination, you can find a career that is right for you.
